My bicoube 29 has been running for about a year and about a 2 weeks ago POOF, a chunk of green hair algea i saw! Thought it was just a little algea bloom but no now it is all over my rock! How can i get rid of it?!?

Change water and make sure your phosphates and nitrates are close to zero. If it is just one rock that you can get out. You can dip it in Hydrogen peroxide. You can also do a low dose of Hydrogen peroxide to the whole tank. I think 1ml per gallon.

unless you have a biocube 29 with the LED fixture i would recommend replacing your bulbs asap if you haven't yet in the time you have owned your tank, after replacing the bulbs scrub as much algae off the rocks as you can with a toothbrush and do a water change sucking out as much of the algae as possible and make sure your clean-up crew is sufficient for you tank, the next day i would take out and clean or replace any of your filter media (carbon, sponges) that have filtered out any left over algae pieces.

It is caused by excess nutrients usually from overfeeding or phoshates. What are your test results?

What water are you using? Is it ro/di from your own filters?

THank you everyone first off im getting diy rapid led lights for x mas and i use tapwater sadley. Im gonna due exactley what reefread said when i get my leds!

It's more than likely your water source than your light bulbs shifting in spectrum. If you're dechlorinating tap water for your reef, then you've been accumulating dissolved organics for awhile. Personally, I would try to resolve your water filter needs before upgrading the lights. You can get an reverse osmosis filter with a deionizing filter stage (aka RODI), or you should commit to getting your water from a place that uses one (a good LFS, for example). Dismantling a reef to scrub the rocks is a stopgap measure and isn't part of the maintenance required from a healthy system.

My tank had an algae bloom after using tap water ,,,, Never again will I make that mistake !! My .02 scrub algae with brush ,water change, and syphon substrate. And like mentioned the next day do some maitenance on your filter. It's been a month since my dumb mistake, and I'm still fighting algae , good luck !!!!
