Something about reefing you just don't understand....

Coral taxonomy. I understand some scientific names, but I want to learn more about each species to tell them apart from each other and provide the best care I can.

Some context:
Most stony corals are not identifiable down to species-level due to a variety of reasons. Sometimes, molecular data does not match up with morphospecies, or the type material is an ambiguous illustration that could refer to multiple morphospecies. Other times, taxonomists (mostly Veron) dubiously apply random phenotypes to species that don't match up with the type material.

Honestly, it’s a never ending endeavor. Especially with mixed tanks. I call it the juggling act. Reefing definitely has a way of keeping us humble!

It is so beyond frustrating! I guess I'll have to learn how to let thing go in this hobby too... It's just hard when you put time, effort, and money into something. Why so many tanks are radically overstocked with fish.

Why so many tanks are running on minimal hardware, and even less knowledge.

Why anyone thinks it a good idea to go from dry tank to fully stocked in less than a year.

Why no one seems concerned about the extraordinary amount of livestock collected from the wild that dies a preventable death.

How does God keep his reef parameters together without any dosing pumps? Sea water with proper mix of elements, temperature, mixing together upwelling deep currents with wave and wind driven surface waters that push onto the worlds reefs and feed them with the nutrients they need to thrive without a hitch.

I don't understand why so many people have so many problems with fish disease.

Because it can be daunting and have SO much in the way of a negative outcome if managed improperly. It boils down to confidence. Me? I'm good with human disease states and it would be hard to argue with me on that issue. But fish? I lack confidence. It's a different beast.

Why scammers are so prevalent. There are companies that scam people daily but they are allowed to continue to advertise on multiple sites. People still buy from them. I noticed when it comes to coral sales that even when 100% of the customer base says, "I was scammed" they are still allowed to continue to do business. It's not just this website either. I notice it across the board. Then you have gimmick products, and people just buy them. It's like when we start this hobby we removed our brains and tossed them in the dang tank!

Approaching a year soon, what I’d really like to understand is what makes a tank mature. Some experienced folks have told me that mine will never be due to starting with dry rock and I constantly hear about folks having to duke it out and battle pests and nuisance algae. Yes, I’ve had some scrimmage with these things but I honestly think folks are very quick to freak out about anything unsightly. I’m still a noob but I got the feeling some of the unsightly stuff is part of ‘maturity’

I know what you mean, but I think that so much is written about how to cure fish and practically nothing on how to keep fish healthy in the first place.

If we keep on this same track as we have been since the hobby started in 1971, we will always have disease problems because fish will always come in with different diseases which IMO are simple to avoid. Just my opinion of course and I am opinionated.
