Something has overrun my tank, help!

Are you sure about that? Who said what’s pictured here is non photosynthetic?
Ive seen this stuff over a couple of decades and serviced tanks via my LFS and its the same stuff

I have a nero 5 set to 1800gph in a system with 13g total water volume. I highly doubt low flow is an issue.
How fast does it come back after complete removal? Judging by the sand not being pushed around, I'd question 1800gph in a 13g.. or do you regularly smooth it back out?

How often/much are you doing water changes?

Are you siphoning this stuff out or blowing it around to get picked up by mechanical?

Have you been losing clean up crew?

Is the rock cycled live rock or artificial?

How old is the tank?

I’ve seen this stuff as well and have been doing this for decades
41 years here and doesnt matter - again. doing maintenance for many years, got rid of it each time. I just got home from work and will not argue on this all night.
