Hello all,
I got something weird in my tank that I cant quite figure out. I thought at first it was a bacteria bloom or fine sand particles floating around clouding the water but now I am unsure. I know its not micro bubbles for sure. I was gone a couple days and my wife said she noticed the rocks seemed to "shed" almost. That was the best way she could describe it. It was like clear with a tint of brown.
I have noticed that the filter socks (2 of them 6"x15") fill up with light brown stuff fast. My skimmer also is not producing like it should because it gets a REALLY THICK brown slime on the neck real quick. THe bubbles seem to be heavy almost. At the sump I have my large beckett skimmer which is 10" round and almost 3' tall. Last night at 9pm I decided to throw a reef octopus 150 ext on the display also to see what it did. It started out skimming good producing good bubbles so I left it and went to bed. This morning I woke up and the same thing.....Thick brown sludge on the neck and not much of anyting in the collection cup. Just like the skimmer at the sump. Water is no where near clear like it should be. Any ideas?
Oh and also I ran a marineland water polisher and after about a hour its clogged up. When rinsing out the filter the water is light brown coming off it.
Tank is 300 gallon display, 65 gallon sump, 75 gallon fuge and approx 400 pounds of live rock between them all. Live rock was dry rock when started over a month ago.
Cheato is growing like it should. 0 nitrates and phosphates are undetectable.
Alk 9.6
Calcium 410
Mag 1400
Any ideas of thoughts what this could be?

If it is a bloom do they just usually run their course and it clears up?
I have a 50w UV running but doesn’t seem to be helping matters. It’s been on for over a week if not 2 weeks. This partly makes me think it’s something else. Something that the UV does not touch.
