I agree with the sponge ID. I am not very good with sponges, ask the experts :)

Could the pods be tanking up some of the nutrients/food? Just wondering. Lets call in the experts!

Pods feed on detritus/algae, which is why their numbers will often explode in a "dirty tank".

Agreed on the stuff around your powerhead. They look like sponges to me as well - and sponges are generally a good thing.

I'm sorry to hear about your goby and mandarin. Horrible and frustrating.

Out of curiosity, how often do you blow detritus out of your rocks / sand / refugium? Your nitrates are certainly nothing to worry about at 5 - that's just about ideal for reefs, IIRC. Worthy of note, perhaps, that both of the fish who passed were substrate feeders, so wondering if they encountered something that the others didn't.

If the Dragonet is new, I am guessing could it be cyanide poisoning? This holds true if the fish inhaled too much of it (during when they are caught from the wild).

I doubt cyanide would be needed to collect a slow moving dragonet, unless he was just collateral from other fish being targeted.
