Got this scratch right in the middle of the front of the tank…on the outside. It’s from a tunze strong magnet algae scraper that my puppy got ahold of and must have gotten a piece of sand or gravel on it. It’s really pretty noticeable despite being quite shallow…I can barely, barely feel it with my fingernail. Unfortunately it’s in the worst possible spot. The glass is starfire and the tank is barely a year old…so I’m pretty bummed. Suggestions please.

Probably the best bet is cerium oxide like jewelers use, but it makes a real mess and takes some time/effort. It’s worked for some people while others say it’s not worth the effort. Might want to do some research on it and decide if you want to try.

Give it 1 to 2mos for your brain to quit looking at it.

I have a 180 with various scratches that don't even register in my brain anymore unless I remind myself to look for them.

If it's starphire glass just wait. You will have plenty of them as that glass is soft.

It's what inside that matters anyways. Don't worry bro. Keep on reefing.

Join the club, the fees are due at the end of the year....

It sux I've done it to a couple new tanks too, I tried Cerium Oxide with no luck and I buffed it for days. I just try to not think about them...sorry I know that doesn't help

Look into Cerium Oxide its easier when its external but I still didn't have any luck, and I could feel it as you described...

I've heard toothpaste but this requires draining the tank lol
Nothing will "fill" the scratch you can only bring the surrounding glass down to the bottom of the scratch, trust me just think about something else or buying a new tank. Its a good excuse for a bigger tank...

If the scratch is shallow and on the outside you can try toothpaste as suggested above, or baking soda is what I always use and works for me. Just google baking soda and scratches in glass for directions...

Keep in mind if you try and polish it. You could end up making it a bit distorted. Tread carefully

Baking soda won't distort it -- if it's a shallow scratch it shouldn't be a big deal. I use it all the time on my glass top desk to remove shallow scratches, and used it on my Waterbox Cube 10 when it first arrived w/some scratches.

Or it'll make it look worse.

just ignore it.

What does the outside of *your* house look like?

You can use turtle wax rubbing compound and orange go soap w/ pumice mixed 25/75 and buff it out. Use it all the time for auto glass. Works like a charm. Gotta have a buffer though.

Like I said, I use it all the time on my glass top desk, and used it to buff out shallow scratches on my Waterbox Cube. It works very well and doesn't do any harm.

If there is concern around believing that, simply testing it (or the other options offered, like toothpaste or commercial glass polish) on another less noticeable portion of the glass, like in the back, can be an option.

Toothpaste with magic eraser seems to be the best but of course water level needs to be reduced

Some methods can distort it and many were listed here.

Can’t tell how shallow it really is in the photo. Sounds like he can feel it with a fingernail tho.

I would try the least aggressive methods firsts.
