Soprano pack growout

Hey guys and gals, if everything works out this pack will get shipped out this Tuesday for Wednesday delivery.

$ Sent! Let me know if it does not come through.

I would prefer less shipments to keep shipping costs down. However, I know that this will end up being a TON of frags for BCT to have in his tank and understand it space is an issue. If my math is correct at the end of the thing there will be 138 frags. I am fine with fragging when each coral gets to 6 full size polps and then letting those grow out while waiting for the slackers to get their 6 polps. Truly though, whatever is easiest for BCT as the grower.

Thanks!

Just wanted to let everyone know the add on money has been sent.

Yeah, it is going to be a ton of frags when everything is said and done. I haven't figured out exactly how i am going to handle that situation. I will probably end up plumbing another tank into my system to house them all (I have a 36 inch tank, with a sweet T5 fixture, and korallia powerheads, that I am about to drill and fit in there, this might just speed me up)...or maybe end up sending two shipments.

This is what I was considering, once the colonies growout a little we can frag them (basically in half) and send them to a "backup" grower. The backup grower will not only serve as a backup, but if everything goes well can help to distribute the pack to the additional group members as the backup frags grow. This will reduce clutter in my tank and give us a form of redundancy. This still requires consideration and group input.

But this can easily complicate shipping and may not be suitable

Nice!

Would it be a good idea for us to hash out some of the details in this thread and start a new thread that lists all the details on the front page and then follows the growout? We have brought up quite a few questions / suggestions that I don't think we have answered yet.

Yeah can get it figured out here, what are you thinking about?

I know we need to figure out how many polyps we want to grow before we frag.

We can discuss a backup plan/grower if you guys feel it is neccesary...I am confident of my skills but things do happen.

We can figure out how to handle fragging, frag colonies at speciic size and then let frags grow, or continue to let them grow ten try to divide the colonies when everything is ready. Either way I am going to try and make everybody get the same amount of each polyp. I am goin to pm you guys some of my personal info tomorrow with the tracking info so each of you can track the box if you want.

What other details need considering?

These are the things I was thinking of... I have not done this before but I can throw out some ideas to at least get us started.

# of shipments: I would prefer to have everything shipped at once or at least in as few shipments as BCT's system will allow. The more shipments we have the more we lose the benefit of the group buy. I suppose it is possible to leave this up to the individual as well. We don't have to all do it the same way.

# of polyps - It would seem like we should all get at least what the original pack included. Obviously, the sopranos are the most crucial. Someone suggested earlier that it might be better to wait until we have two polyps each because this will give them a better chance of surviving the shipping and acclimation process. Any of you have an opinion on this? Anyone know how fast / slow these grow out?

"Extra polyps" - since all of the frags won't grow at the same rate, it is conceivable we would end up with "extra frags". We could either divide these evenly among the group or consider selling them to recoup costs...or if things go well...use the funds for another group buy :)

Updates - it might be a good idea to have a regular update schedule (with pics if possible) so we don't drive BTC nuts while we wait :) Reading through some other group buys it seems like good communication is the key to success.

You have some good points, here is some of my thoughts...

I plan to update at least once a week probably on Saturday's, maybe saturdays and wednesday, we will have to see what time allows. I am working on my PhD in Mechanical/Computational engineering and occasionally get really stressed for time. I should be able to give updates at least every Saturday though.

The thought of selling the extra polyps to make money back or the group never crossed my mind but might be a good idea with some of the fast growers. My plan was to divide the polyps up so everybody gets the same amount in the end whether that is 10 polyps of one zoa and 2 polyps of another because of growth rate.

I agree about shipping as little as possible because you want to spend as little as possible in the growout, fewer shipments = less money spent.

From your suggestion, if we have some extra non dividable polyps at the end we could build a pack and list it for sale...then either split the money or put it towards another pack. Maybe even trade that pack for another one ;). However, we will not know for sure about this until the growout gets underway.

I plan to have an open line of communication and hope to see some discussion occur often in the growth thread when started. I use tapatalk on my iPhone and check in on here quite often.

By the way, this pack is shipping tomorrow.

I'm interested to see what everybody elsr thinks on the points you brought up, and any others too

The worst part will be getting sleep every night hoping its still there in the morning!

This is exactly why I was thinking it might be good to wait until there are 2 sopranos each...or give each individual the choice. Maybe someone with experience growing sopranos can chime in...would they be any more stable if there were 2 rather than 1?

Since its a brand new wild polyp it may not act like the last batch of Sopranos that came in, could be more stable, could be the same risk level.

I'll have my fingers crossed as i dip it into my tank...hopefully it doesn't disintigrate on the way down to the bottom.

The other ones in the pack without the Soprano are worth it as is, and it should go FAST with the size frags Travis hooked it up with.
