Sorry for the long post ahead. First, Does anyone know how accurate the calcium Hanna checker is? I tested my calcium Monday evening and it was reading 540, which seems really high compared to normal. Alkalinity is 7.0, which is sort of lower than usual. A couple of weeks ago alkalinity was reading 7.8 and has slowly dropped as calcium has gone up. Phosphates are high as well, reading .2.

All of my corals seem to be doing fine but we have had a couple of fish acting weird. Foxface has abnormal spots and has been super skittish, which I know is usual for a foxface but it’s not normal for him. Usually he’d come to the top of the tank for feedings but the last week or so hasn’t. We pulled him out for quarantine last night. Also have a firefish we haven’t been able to catch that is showing signs of either fin rot or aggression. We can’t figure out which it is. This has been going on for about a week, when we noticed the foxface having these weird spots, that oddly enough can’t be seen under normal lighting. Humblefish said they’re probably coral stings but they disappear, reappear and change places. Last night I noticed him twitching so that’s when I decided to pull him for quarantine. Also trying to get the firefish out to try and determine if it’s fin rot or just aggression, hoping it’s aggression with the other firefish so we can rehome him as we don’t have another tank- we do have 2 firefish that we got as a “pair” and they’ve been fine up until we woke up one morning to our second looking like this.

All parameters checked with Hanna except magnesium and ammonia
PH 8.24 seneye (8.5 Monday night hanna checker)
Salinity 1.025
Temp 78.0
Phosphate .2 (I know a little high)
Alkalinity 7.0
Calcium 540
Magnesium 1350
Nitrate 8
Ammonia 0 (seneye) .01 with Red Sea (test kit has been used since October so may be outdated- have another being shipped and delivered tomorrow as a precaution)

I have a torch, hammers, acan, monti, acropora, etc - tons of corals that all appear to be doing just fine as well as 3 anemones so I don’t know if it’s a parameter issue that’s causing this with my fish? I’m stumped.

We did have a sponge last week that appeared to randomly be rotting. Started adding sponge power and iodine/AB+ daily and it has pretty much made a full recovery in just a week.

I’m worried the firefish has fin rot - no idea why or how. But if it is I want him out of the display asap. However I don’t want to quarantine him with the foxface and mix two potential sicknesses together. Would it be safer to put my foxface back in the display and treat the display with prazipro (it says it can be used as a preventative and is reef safe??)
and then firefish into quarantine? All other fish are acting normal and appear fine

other fish include 2 clowns, 1 royal gramma, another firefish, leopard wrasse, diamond goby, tomini tang, valentini puffer, ruby dragonet, and mandarin dragonet.

Speaking to the fish issues.

Can you post a pic and short video of the foxface under white light?

I think the issue with the firefish is from aggression. Off the cuff, if the other firefish has perfect fins, I would say that is the culprit.

While the foxface may indeed have coral stings, that wouldn't directly cause the twitchy behavior or the poor feeding response. I suspect flukes.....

If corals and inverts are fine, its likely disease.

PH is high, but once again corals and inverts would feel that first

any new additions at all? not just fish-wise, but any new thing in the tank water

We did go to a frag swap on Saturday but these symptoms were showing before then. Prior to that was a mandarin dragonet that was not quarantined because it wasn’t taking frozen foods and my tank is seeded with copepods. Not sure if two diseases could have been brought in from one fish? I guess it’s a possibility.

two diseases could be brought by one fish. Why do you think its two diseases?

White light picture of foxface, dots can barely been seen under normal lighting. Tried to get a video of the twitching but he hasn’t done it in the quarantine tank. I noticed it last night in the display and that’s why I made the call to pull him.

I’m not sure the firefish is experiencing aggression or if it is fin rot. This photo was taken last week however it’s gradually getting worse. His dorsal fin is now splitting and the bottom part of his fins are starting to go/appear to have white at the tips. I’ll try to get a photo when I get home tonight. Couldn’t get a good one this morning. He’s still eating though.

This photo was taken Sunday. Again, spots can only really be seen under the blue light. Under white light they almost appear nonexistent.
