I have a 60 gal tank with a center overflow and a external Dolphin Amp Master pump returning the water through 4 1" returns - with all the plumbing, elbows roughly 8 ft of head or 800 gals/hr flow. Instead of using the stock 1" return in the overflow, I drilled a 1.5" hole in the back and have a modified durso out the back of the tank. This setup handles the flow but barely and I have it as quiet as I think I can get it but was curious if I can get it almost silent (my future tank will be herbie/bean).

I was looking at these:

I would install one right above the overflow and one right behind the overflow. My fear is that the salt rich environment would deteriorate these things and drop particles right into the water - lord knows what types of chemicals these things are made of?

Anyone done anything similar?

Not knowing what it is made of would worry me. Looks like foam, but who knows.

Is the drain loud? Like sucking water gurgling load? Dial down the drains

Julian sprung and charles derbeek claimed that some city aquariums indeed use polyurethane foam instead of live rock, so i wouldnt doubt it. Sounds like polyurethane cures in oxygen and should be waterproof.

No, I solved the gurgling issue with a cap on the durso and a U shaped tubing (rigid over the tank return) installed on top of the cap to suck air from below. It sounds like a bubbling stream now, not crazy loud but just loud enough to feel like I want to fix it. I don't want to decrease the flow as I have an SPS tank and utilize the flow from the 4 1" returns instead of a bunch of power heads although I do have a Gyre 150 on one side of the tank in pulse at 90%.

@Sabellafella - thanks for the research. I feel like emailing the ATM guys on tanked as they are always using some sort of polymer, paint, plastic in their tanks!

@melypr1985 - thanks, I was going to put similar insulation panels on my stand doors and sides but I wanted something more acoustical above the overflow where I believe I get about 80% of the audible noise. I also have a 4x26" or so vent running the length of the hood so i only wanted to block the middle 10" or so, hence the acoustical panel vs the insulation.
