I just got a wp40. I was talking with @saltyfilmfolks About the fact that it is a little bit loud. I made the statement I do not mind hearing a happy reef. But that got me thinking, Does the sound bother the fish? I can't believe it never crossed my mind before. But if I can hear the pump in the Next Room it must be kind of loud inside the water where sound travels further. I was curious if anybody has an opinion or knows of any research on the subject? The fish seem to be acting the same but I could just put it in so I suppose it might take time to affect them.

Good question I never thought if or how sound effects fish. Will be following your thread

Wait a minute! You can actually hear the wp40 in the next room? That don't sound right at all! I have 2 wp40 and a rw 20! I can barely hear them in the same room unless I've got my head right next to the tank! Also about the noise not from research but have u ever gone to the beach stood there and listened to the waves! Well some times they are so loud you can't hear the person next you talking! The sea is a loud and violent place, I'm sure the fish can cope with it. Don't fish use a different sound wave to communicate?! Like dolphins? So maybe they hear sounds different to us! Maybe someone from a marine biology background can answer these questions!

Yes you can hear it in the Next Room. You have to stop and listen to tell what it is. But you can hear the background hum. Especially as it is going up and down in the functions. I will see if I can get it on a video when I get home in about an hour. I hope it is not a bother because I really like the pump

Maybe because of the setting you have it on, I believe you have it on else mode! If I remember correctly mine was still not that loud! I could hear a sligh humming but nothing major! I have a dual controller with my wp40 so I have them on alternating mode! And I don't hear anything apart from the water splashing! I have also found that with a dual controller you have a much stronger flow and more settings!

The one wp40 is almost too strong Unless you can put a dual controller on the 40 and 25 at the same time then I can't do that. :-( And the sound is not atrocious. It is just a humming sound of it kicking up and downs

Fwiw. A reef is amazingly loud in the wild.
It's believed it another way animals may locate them.

Gooooogle it.

Yea. Too much pbs in my house

LONG LIVE ATTENBOUROUGH!!!!!

The sound outside the tank. In the vidd the water is louder. But in the other room the pump is louder. Must be the pich.

You seem to have it pretty low in the tank. So maybe the vibration bouncing off the stand are causing the sound to be loud! I have mine towards the top about 2-3" from the water line!

It started on the top left but was too strong even on its weakest setting. So it blows behind the rocks now to dampen the flow. Still a beast though. And it was just as loud up top.

Sometimes you can turn the dry side and it will find its sweet spot.
The waves in a wild reef are crazy loud in or out the water. a lot louder than an mp40
