I was thinking back to my reefs from the early 2000s and we used to get the most fantastic rock from fiji covered with small feather dusters who would spawn in your reef and spread out all over the tank. Anyone have a source for those animals? I miss that.

not sure. those are excellent coral feed sources, free ammonia indicators, cycle status indicators, they're awesome and not very common

i bet the phasing out of live rock starts reduced them in the hobby

yeah, it is sad. I'm primarily interested in a reef tank as an ecosystem. I started with TBS rock for that reason since it is the only source for real live rock anymore. I got great sponges and macro algaes and inverts but none of those amazing worms.

Are you talking about just simple feather dusters or tubular worms/bisma worms? Just curious. I home two rocks of bismas in my tank.
Just talking about the simple feather dusters. As far as I know, Bisma worms will not reproduce in your tank.

I have them all over my tank. I love them too, especially under a microscope. If you want to drive up to Statesville, NC and can take some feel free. I warn you though, I have an aiptasia issue right now though.

Yeah, as far as I know as well, experimenting with a clean rock next to one of my christmas tree worm rock see if they spread.

Feather dusters for the win!

Man, If I were still in CLT I would definitely take you up on that and bring some frags for the trouble but I'm in Raleigh now so it's a tough haul with a two year old at home. Aiptasia are insidious. I thought I had avoided them but all of a sudden I'm seeing them. added nothing, they were just hiding and biding their time for years.

I've read in multiple posts on here that bisma worms can indeed multiply. Although it's not known how it may be asexually. Those with xmas tree worm rocks sometimes have more worms appear over time if all things are healthy.

a shame I don't have room for a huge chunk of porites to try it out with, that would be fun.

Same here...

... Although Bisma worm rocks have become exorbitantly expensive lately! I've seen them priced in the $400 range. I remember when they were common place and cost about $30, haha.

Heres my thread on my current science experiment. They are by far my favorite thing in my tank now.
