Source for quality live rock?

Pacific rock is my favorite. Mitch Heidelberg at livestockusa is hopeful that a source will be available soon;) He is one of the guys who have been in the hobby and business for 40+ years. Email him so he can bring you up to speed. [email protected]

I have not ordered from them yet but in the past I hear they are great.

That would be nice if they found a new source.

These bans are having a big impact on live rock and other things.
I have not seen a giagantea anemone anywhere.

There’s a place by me in SE Michigan, they claim to be the first “coral farm”. That being said they have a roughly 1000gal vat filled with true live rock coated in coraline and all the other good stuff you want, not the other stuff you don’t. If you PM me I will gladly share their contact information with you. I do not know if name dropping is allowed since to my knowledge they are not a forum sponsor. But I will say they have exactly what you’re looking for and my guess would be they could ship it to you. You are going to pay for it though.

There should be no reason not too... i do not think here is no rule against it. People do it all the time.
I would go into one of the sponsors forums and post though...

None of the local shops that I'm aware of carry live rock (meaning rock covered with real coralline algae and not the stuff coated with an artificial material.) Hence, I'm looking for rock like we could get back in the 90's: Coralline algae-coated rock with a minimum of sponges, tunicate, barnacle, etc. Can someone recommend a source?

I would buy the coralline rock from Gulfview. It won't be covered with tons of life and when I bought it, it was shipped moist wrapped in paper towels. It was comparable to raw Fiji rock at the time(early 2000's).

It did have more life on it though right out of the box, couple crabs and snails, some sponge life. I had lots of red algaes sprout up from this rock, some which were difficult to keep under control. I also had about 10 urchins grow off this rock. This was only 30 lbs of rock. It has coralline coverage, but not like the thick plating you would see on Fiji rock.

KP Aquatics is my new favorite. I discovered them recently after being out of the hobby for a few years. They offer air-freighting, but they also offer an overnight shipping option for those who don't want to trek to the airport to pick up their rock in a box of water. I ordered a 10# box of their rock overnighted. The price was steep, almost $10/lb, but this was real live rock. Plants, inverts, sponges, even some corals. Plus, this was shipped overnight in damp newspaper, so most of the harmful hitchhikers (crabs, mantis shrimps, etc) were at the bottom of the box when I opened it. A lot of diversity ended up surviving.

This stuff reminds me of what you would get when you ordered "uncured rock" 10+ years or so. I wish I had found them when I first set up my tank.

The shop is called Tropicorium. If you decide to look them up and give them a call ask for Ray.

Yes that’s the place! Not sure how long ago you were there but not much has changed. They still have a great selection of fish & coral as well as several different options for live rock. They are my go to anytime I want to get either live or dry rock.

Tropicorium outside of Detroit (Romulus, I think)? I visited there in the late 90's. Wasn't sure if they were still around.

Yes that’s the place. Like I mentioned above I doubt much has changed since the last time you were there. Still a greenhouse, still running undergravel filters off compressed air, still have the big vats, etc.

How I miss the days of real live rock.

Seems your in the US so upside is you folks have access to Florida stuff which on my view is better then nothing.

Closest to live rock in my part of the world is the fake real reef rock. While kept in water its still fake coated purple and too uniform for me, doesny look natural and for whst it is too much $$ for what it is.

I love real reef new rock. It is not that uniform anymore as it used to be.
I have set up several tanks with it. Walt 2.0 is really purple.

After this video I have done several real reef rock tanks:
