Sources of iodine

Got my ati icp test back today. Iodine 1026 µg/l nothing that else is heavily elevated or missing.

I have never dosed iodine. For that matter i am not currently dosing anything at the moment. As switched to aws for awhile.

Ro/di came back clean(was not a surprise my tds meter also shows 0).

Was wondering what i could i look for as to why my iodine is so elevated?

Changed out my gac reactor and will turn off the aws till i test some new salt water.

Any other possible sources if i test and its negative.

Could have also been my old mix, i am only about a 15g into my new bucket though.

You are not high in iodine. See this link near the end. Reading from reef tanks are 0.0 to 2 ppm. You are at 1.03 ppm.

Lrs, hikari coral gumbo and occasionally hatched brine shrimp or diced scallops and squid. Are the only foods i feed. Suppose the nori portion of lrs maybe?

Yep. Nori can be rich in iodine. I would imagine that anything in the ocean that eats algae/vegetation probably accumulates iodine as well.

But as long as you are within the normal range for a reef, I wouldn’t worry about it too much. Coral utilizes iodine to synthesize pigments, so it’s good to have some in the environment.

Foods are the usual source when not dosing, especially seaweeds.

FWIW, the natural level of about 0.06 ppm = 0.06 mg/l = 60 ug/L.

I've seen no evidence that higher levels like 1000 ug/L are a problem, but I haven't looked at many studies. I'd be most concerned if it came from dosing Lugols, which is a different form and more toxic than iodide or iodate.

I had read something by Riddle suggesting that YFPs were influenced by halides (not just iodine).

Maybe it’s important, maybe it’s not...I don’t know.
