I will be getting some new rock soon and as such my mind is ablaze with potential aquascaping possibilities. I have watched numerous videos on the rule of thirds and the golden ration. I was wondering, are there any "rules" you guys follow or expressly go against when planning out or re-arranging your aquascaping?

Other than design, which it seems you have researched and tends towards personal tastes, I think some good generic advice is to keep space between the glass and the rock for cleaning and flow. Do not stack too high to allow for growth. If you use dry rock, cure it.

As stated above and let me add. Think of the livestock you will keep. Examples. If you have royal bassets they like to live in rock holes. Other fish hide under rocks some in the sand. Urchins hide in dark spots during the day. Anything will be less stressed if it has a place to go when it feels threatened.

Good points guys. I should be getting my box of rocks in the next few days and look forward to posting here for everyone to offer their opinions.
