wondering what or if most have spare pump in the wings? Direct replacement in gph or just a crap shoot. Changed pump plans and was wondering if saving new pump as back up or buying a used submersable <(800 gph) to get thru issue. Hate to have new pump sitting in storage and may not get used for awhile. Have recipt to i can return

Id take back the new pump if you can find a used pump that will do the same thing. Or if you can see any upgrades in the near future keep the pump. Like an extra frag tank or something along those lines.

I suppose it depends on the primary. If I used a cheap DC, I'd definately have a drop in replacement on hand. As it is, I use decades long pumps like Iwaki or PanWorld. Even so, I always have a pump or two sitting around that I could quickly press into service in an emergency.

Whether submersible or internal I make sure I have a couple used or new pumps that are serviceable in the applications I might need. That means if i have a return line originating in a 1 inch union ball valve that accepts a threaded male input, then that's the type of outlet I need on whatever spare pump I have. Could be different model or gph, just needs to hookup to the existing plumbing fittings seamlessly without needing to run to any hardware store or modify the plumbing in any way. Just a straight drop in replacement. Even with super reliable pump models this is a good idea because you can never predict when something unexpected goes wrong.

I had my circuit break today and lost all power to my tank for like 30 minutes, when I got it back on my DC pump wouldn't start. Scared the crap out of me, I took it out cleaned it, reconnected it and eventually it turned back on after multiple attempts. After that, I put in an order for a backup pump....
