This may be a dumb question. Forgive me my ignorance. I have a 2 year old mated pair of clarkii clownfish. In the last few months they have begun spawning. Is there a way to stop them? I'm seriously worried about her health. I am not set up at the moment for an extra set up to raise fry. I already have a 180 display that they are in. A 20 QT for fish, 20 QT for coral and a 55 gallon freshwater. In other species repeatedly breeding can compromise health. Is it the same with them as I am assuming. The eggs hatch on day 8 like clockwork. But they spawn again within 2 days of the eggs hatching. An advice?

Why do you assume they are unhealthy? If fact, if they are spawning it means quite the contrary - they are perfectly happy and healthy.

I mean you could separate them but why would you do that? Mating happens rarely in our systems, Clownfish are one of the fish that will spawn, and honestly its part of the process really. Unless you have a system setup however the chance of any of the fry surviving is virtually 0% but the tank inhabitants will get a snack out of them...

You could also try and take the rock out that the eggs are laid on and bring it to a LFS. Maybe they have a system or would be willing to care for them but its doubtful with the amount of effort that is required - doesn't hurt to ask though.

Generally, a clownfish pair that spawning is doing so because they are healthy and happy enough to spawn. I have never heard of them breeding themselves to death. I suppose it is possible but that would be a first as far as I am aware. This is a good sign and if they ever become too unhealthy to spawn they will then no longer do so.

Thank you. I would love to raise them but have to get a tank cycled first. I was more worried about their health from spawning so much.

Thank you all so much. That is a relief. I have a 20 cycling for clownfish fry. They are a beautiful pair.
