They can be used horizontally. They have (or should) a marking that says something along the lines of “this side up for horizontal use”. The “hinge” part of the flapper needs to be at the top for it to function.
I’m not a fan of check valves in general but they are designed to be used both ways. I don’t think it would be much of a difference either way. I would suggest trying to design your system so that you do not need a check valve. It’s just one more thing that can and will fail. Just keep your return output onlyIs it better to install vertically? Seems like it could affect how well it works...

Slightly under the water surface. When the pumps go off only a small amount of water will siphon back until it’s exposed to the air breaking the siphon.
