I bought two of the true union Spears swing check valve and wondering can I install them horizontal? I could not find anything that says otherwise. These are the clear ones from BRS

Thanks

They can be used horizontally. They have (or should) a marking that says something along the lines of “this side up for horizontal use”. The “hinge” part of the flapper needs to be at the top for it to function.

Is it better to install vertically? Seems like it could affect how well it works...

I’m not a fan of check valves in general but they are designed to be used both ways. I don’t think it would be much of a difference either way. I would suggest trying to design your system so that you do not need a check valve. It’s just one more thing that can and will fail. Just keep your return output only
Slightly under the water surface. When the pumps go off only a small amount of water will siphon back until it’s exposed to the air breaking the siphon.

My sump can handle the extra volume if the check valve fails, that's no problem. The check valve is for convenience when feeding.

I agree, I don't need it, but nice to have as I am running two return pumps and if one pump fails, it gives me bit of time to turn the valve off for that pump.

The swing checks, just like the Y valves, are designed to work both vertically and horizontally. As noted, you just have to make sure that the pivot point for the flapper is facing up.
