Each year there seems to be a trend and a certain species of coral in demand. Way back it was acans, then zoas, then chalice and after that was SPS.
What seems to be the 2017 species? Seems like SPS is still running strong with mushrooms filling the gap?

What are your thoughts?

I dunno. I see SPS waning a bit (IMO at least in part due to drama surrounding certain pieces)...though the diehard stick heads aren't going anywhere. I agree that mushrooms seem to be the rage right now (I'm seeing mushrooms that couldn't formerly get $40 hitting over $100 easy). I don't think that will last long though...drama kills these trends, and it's already breaking out among the shroom crowd. I've seen some revival among acan prices and demand lately, so I'm betting acans this year...however, for the stick heads, there's no substitute for awesome acros...I think that stick fans are kind of a subculture that really will be around regardless of what LPS or soft coral is trending at the moment.

Also, we may see sticks pick up new revived steam if/when these Alk monitors actually hit the market. That tech will make it possible for people who formerly struggled to keep sticks much more successful. Which will probably mean more SPS dominant tanks...no complaints from me there. :D

Tough one for me! I know what I want but I still think it's up in the air!

Not sure if it's going to happen in 2017 but once we figure out how to sustain enough zooplankton in our reefs or feed a lot without fouling the water, it's NPS time. Who wouldn't want a few of those dendronephteas or gorgonias in their tank? But just like we waited for the alk monitors we need to wait a few more years to make that trend possible.

IMO, the sticks are out for the trend this year.
Reason is that every vendor has these nice sticks now days and the market got flooded with them as they all want a piece of it.
Just run around the live sales and all the rare high end priced sticks just don't fly anymore.
For that I will say that 2017 will be the year of the LPS, I see the Euphyllias, Goni's, blasto's and the Galaxea coral making the 2017 year their year.
Especially the Galaxea corals are far from gone.
We all know the purple and the green Galaxea, but what about the rainbow, tri-color, yellow and the red Galaxea.
I picked up a few of the last for at my LFS, the owner told me he will not sell these cause they are aggressive and YES they are aggressive.
If you keep them low on the sand and away from other corals you shouldn't have a problem.
He brought in two weeks ago a few colonies and fragged them up................... well they are all gone and is looking for more.
They are inexpensive and look like little mini torches, for less than $15 you can have already a frag as we speak, that is when the demand will go up the price will be going up as well.
The Euphyllias never were gone but with a few new species I have seen, like the rainbow frogspawn and rainbow hammer they will be on their way back.
We all know the red Goni from ORA that does so well but what about all the new species you see coming on the market, multi color gonis with crazy names for less than $20.
The name of the game in 2017 IMO is how do I put together a awesome reef for less money that a Birthday Acro or a WD stick.
I sold off all my SPS for a lot of money (it's like the stock market) I had a feeling that prices will drop on the some rare pieces.
I filled in just for the holidays the 202 Diesel tank up for less than $500 in cheap but attractive corals and most locals think my tank looks nicer than before as it's a example that you can have a amazing reef for cheap.
Pics coming soon.................. so hold your horses

Thanks for all the info and I look forward to seeing the pics.
I may jump into some LPS!

OK,,, I know they're not corals but I have seen many more Rock Flower Anemones than ever before and people are mixing them in with their corals because of the fantastic colors they have. Every time I see a coral auction now, I see a number of these mixed in. They are Hot right now.

SPS love it.
Love my shrooms also.
Shoot back in 97 had a 125 packed with mushrooms. Prices were a bit more reasonable back then but we also did not see BOUNCE, and Eclectus "well I never did"
Wish I had pictures don't know where they went.
It all seems to come full circle

Edit and blasto and ha ha ha..
Still vote SPS

The Trent gets somewhat reflected by the corals shows what they had to offer.
I went to 2 in Dec and majority was all LPS.
Of course I saw some nice SPS but for most hobbyist the prices were to high.

I am with @Salty1962, Chalices is what I am see being competitively bought, and the reason for my assumption is some of the chalices that is was looking at a few months ago are selling for much more.
