Yesterday I opened and used some DI resin from Spectrapure for the first time - have always used BRS - and am having some issues with it. Just wondering if anybody else has experienced this....

When I opened the package, there was a rather foul smell to the resin but I didn't think too much of it. Refilled the canister and began running water. When I first turned the water on I checked the TDS meter .... and to my surprise the reading was well over 273 (77 with incoming water before RO). The tds continued to drop but after running at least 8 gallons through it is still reading 10 and does not seem to want to drop any further. The other thing is that the water that is being produced smells terrible ..... literally like something decaying.

I've never had anything like this happen with the BRS resin ..... has never been any odor and after a few gallons at most tds reads zero and has never ever started in the hundreds!

I didn't change the ro membrane or other filters ..... carbon and solid filter were changed about a month ago and membrane about 3 months ago.

I've sent an e-mail to the company to see what their response is but in the meantime just curious to know if anyone else has had this problem?

What resin did you buy? If it is the MaxCap it is not intended to be a single DI and needs to be used with a second DI.
All resins need to be rinsed up before using the treated water but it is normally a gallon at most.

What is your tap water TDS and RO only TDS?
The odor is the strong anion resin and is common. FAQ FOR REVERSE OSMOSIS
You didnt notice an odor with other brands as it is not as good a resin and was probably not as fresh.

+1 I totally agree with above . I have never had a problem. I have the Maxcap.

Thanks for the info! Water from tap at 186 .... after RO at 23...... after DI and 10+ gallons -11. Most likely then you are right and I ordered the wrong resin, really wasn't thinking about needing twin resin containers. I ordered the mixed bed non-color changing resin.... did not see anything that said it needed two canisters like the maxcap bulk kits did and thought I was okay .... oops...

I'm changing the RO and both prefilters right now and have a package of the brs resin left to use at least.

thanks again for the responses!

I like spectrapure very much but their website and all their products make it confusing to know what you really need. If I'm in doubt I always call them and they are always very patient and are happy to help me get the right product for the job.

Good idea! Apparently that is what I should've done!
