I'm currently fighting a dino outbreak and to try to encourage micro algae to grow I have changed the spectrum on my Hydra 26's to the BRS version of AB+. My original schedule started with 5 hours of mixed spectrum and then went to blues/violet/UV only for the last 7 hours.
My corals, specifically my hammers, do not like the AB+ schedule and have started to bleach over the last couple of weeks.
My question is, will blues/violet/UV still encourage micro algae to grow?

Do you really mean ‘micro’ algae - in other words hair algae and it’s cousins? Or do you mean macros? I’m unfamiliar with the lighting schedule you cite, but it doesn’t seem sensible to me.

dino(flagellate) is a microalgae.

@ca1ore is hair algae a micro algae?

I always think of it as a micro, yes. Though I put it in quotations because I don’t know for certain that it actually is. My point was whether that was what the OP meant. Other than on an ATS, hard to see why one would want to encourage ‘micro’ algae growth ( quotations again lol). Or maybe he meant corraline.

Do ATS grow hair?? Any pictures I ever see of healthy mature growth screens have ulva growing. I have hair in my pond. completely different stuff.

I would say green hair algae are macroalgae. Microalgae is usually microscopic unicellular algae.

Thanks for the replies.
Just to clarify, my method of beating dinos is to grow other, more beneficial algae. Hopefully something green.
This will out compete the dinos. I'm not too concerned what algae starts growing, anything would be preferable to dinos. I can then deal with what I've got once the dinos are eradicated.

They certainly can. Mine grows both GHA and various green turf algae. Ulva is sea lettuce, don’t know that I’ve seen many screens with it.

The Green Macroalga, Ulva lactuca, Inhibits the Growth of Seven Common Harmful Algal Bloom Species via Allelopathy

there's lots of species of Ulva (Enteromorpha) besides lettuce ulva (Ulva lactuca), U. Compressa, Linnaeus, prolifera & intestinalis, to name a few.

I guess you ‘earn’ your forum name then LOL. My ATS screen never looks that bright and green .... or clean.
