So after thought research and a couple simple tests I presume I have a spirulina outbreak. So I've seen numerous times that the "only" useful treatment is chemiclean. After more reading and all I have thought about my stash of furan2. I dipped most of my zoas in it before. So now that I thought that a quick google search of furan2 killing beneficial bacteria it says that good bac is gram positive. Furan kills gram negative. I've also searched spirulina as gram positive or negative. It says its gram negative. So my newest question is.... will furan harm anything else in my tank?

I have never had to use Furan but have also heard it can kill beneficial bacteria that process ammonia and nitrates.
some people also use chemiclean with no issues but I saw one reputable site say to never use chemiclean for the same reason.
a friend of mine had no issues using chemiclean but he had a very established tank. I also used chemiclean once with no issues and again was a tank that was several years old.

can you quarantine to dose a very small amount in a separate container as an option?

hopefully someone with more direct experience using furan can chime in also.

Qt for a small amount is not an option. Lol. Its everywhere

Twillard I think was his name Lasse and Dan P? I think those are the folks. Anyway there were a few write ups and discussions of cyano and spirulina in this site I've read. And like I say I think those are the folks that were heavily involved but idr. I'm at work atm.

I'm wondering if I have the same issue...is the Spirulina almost like a matt of green cyano? It covers all rock and glass, but luckily doesn't smother my corals. You mind posting a pic?

@dbraun15 That's my thread from a few days ago. Theres pics in it

Thanks...that's different than what I have. I'm stumped on mine as well. Good luck eradicating it!
