Splicing XP Aqua RO/DI Flood Guardian

Splicing might be the wrong term, but has anyone with an RO/DI Flood Guardian cut the wire to the optical sensor and reconnected it in order to mount it inside a closed tank? I would like to mount it inside a tall vertical tank and run the wire through a small hole (with grommet), rather than an open lid. I think I can make out four wires connected inside the sensor, so I may just take the plunge, but I figure I can’t be breaking any ground here; someone must have already done this.
