Splitting Herbie overflow into two socks.

In my sump I made room for two filter socks. I’m planning my tanks plumbing and was wondering if it was okay for me to split the overflow into two to split the water between two socks. If i can split it, should my gate valve be right before the split? I plan to add a union before the split so I can remove that section of the plumbing and replace the filter socks since the tubing will go inside the socks. My other idea is to maybe have the section after the split be vinyl tubing instead of hard pvc so I can bend it easy when replacing filter socks.

Personally, I think just having the overflow piped down to one sock is the way to go. The second sock is there to take overflow as the first sock becomes clogged and begins to flood over and into the second sock. I know this doesn't directly answer your question but I'm always trying to find ways to simplify my designs with balancing long-term maintenance/work needed.

Looks like you are very good at building the sump, so I would make a modification to have a small chamber in the corner for the drain. This allows access to socks without moving the drain and allows flow to go to both socks. And if you want to balance the flow between the sock more you can add a plate over the socks that has a bunch of holes.

You can split the siphon. I run triple siphons all the way up to my external drain box, but you can split them on the way down as well. I would split it after the gate, but you can go dual gates as well. I do like the suggestion to put a small box over the sock openings though.

I was actually considering this. Maybe find a way to swivel the pipe so I can switch it to the sock and replace the old one. Pretty much switch between each sock once a week. It’s not simple like you said though lol.

I really had something like that planned out at first but I wasn’t able to execute it properly. I got my cuts wrong and I had to waste about 1/3 of my acrylic sheet. I was also considering making maybe an angled ramp where the water would land and flow into either sock but that may cause a lot of splashing.

I still have time before this tank goes up so if I do get a chance to get more acrylic it may be a good change to make.

FWIW my 120 and 180 both split after the gate valve right above the sump as the sumps have dual filter socks. Been running this way for years and I rarely mess with it, so IME it's fine.
