Splitting tanks

Has any one transferred contents of one tank to a new tank of similar size? Or split contents of one tank into 2 independent tanks? Were there any mini cycles and how did the fish and corals fair? Going from one 16 gal to 16 gallon and one 20 gallon.

I sort of did this back when I switched stands and upgraded from a 10g to a 20g long. I drained all the water into buckets, put the rocks and the animals in a bucket with flow and heat, then put them into a brand new tank after I made the switch. The rocks and everything are out of water for so little time that I don't think a cycle is a concern.

It depends how quick you work though. Is it possible to have the new 16g and 20g set up and half full before you start draining the old tank?

Should have said keeping existing 16g Biocube and adding 20g IM. I could have the 20g half filled before I started taking supply from 16 and transplanting it into 20.
