Splitting vs Growing Euphillia

So I have some torches and hammers that don't split much but who's heads have gotten significantly bigger. But I have this one hammer in particular that keeps splitting like crazy but it's not much bigger than when I got it.. it's gone from 1 head to like 9 over a couple months and the heads keep getting progressively smaller because they keep splitting but the individual heads aren't growing much in size. Anyone else see this?? I'm wondering what causes head growth vs splitting

I honestly wish I knew - but as I've had mixed success with euphyllia in general I tend to just leave my one surviving torch alone and instead marvel that it continues to thrive.
