Sponge filter cleaning

How do I clean sponge filters after they are loaded with detritus? Does not the bleach eat away the plastic?

I just rinse it out in tap water. Let it air dry before being re-used.

Yeah a good blasting in the sink is fine. If I'm doing a water change at the same time I'll use the drained water in a bucket to rinse out any filter media instead of going to the sink.

Thanks, but the rinses do not remove the debris stuck to the filter. THis debris must still have proteins that will break down.

A foam filter for QT?Are you going to reuse it as a bacterial filter?

Not QT, just prefilter for HOB

My hob are used for QT,so I just rinse in water change water to keep my biological filter going.For a pre filter you should be able to soak in water and bleach overnight and rinse with cold water and air dry.

Like mentioned above just ring the sponge out under the faucet. You might want to buy 2 or 3 of these so you can switch them out every now & then too. Also, a little debris leftover is really no big deal either, considering what's in the tank as a whole.
