What is the preferred way to sterilize an air driven sponge filter after use in a QT?

You do not need to sterilize it. All you need to do is to kill or remove the pathogens. Most of the pathogens will not be able to tolerate fresh water. The ones that can tolerate fresh water almost certainly cannot tolerate hot water. I would just run it in hot RODI water.

After fresh water rinsing, I let mine dry thoroughly for several weeks prior to use again.
