OK here is the back story!
We Just replaced our 220G reef tank with a beautiful new 375 G Planet aquarium. All of the rock, fish and corals were put in several 150G Rubbermaid containers for about a month while the changeover happened. Old tank and stand were moved to the garage to become the new sump and new tank was delivered and put on new custom stand. Everything was kept wet and never out of the water for more than 30 seconds or as long as it took to move it from old tank to tubs or tubs to new tank a month later. All of the filters and water circulation were maintained, and corals were under sky lights while in tubs. We discarded the old sand and used the old tank water in the tubs. When we filled the new tank, we used 80% new salt water and 20% old tank water. It has been about 6 weeks since we moved everything back to the new tank. Everything did excellent and we seemed to have avoided any kind of significant recycle.
Here is the question. We had several rocks with significant sponge growth. one in particular was completely covered in a yellow sponge covering. I placed it in an area of low light but visible from the front of the tank. Today I noticed that the sponge?? has grown off the rock and onto the new aragonite sand bed. I was a bit surprised that it has grown 1/2 to 1" or so in 6 weeks. Can any of you confirm that it is a sponge or is this something else? The rock in the picture has this all the way around the rock on all 4 sides. I have a couple of other rocks with smaller patches but this one is completely covered. It doesn't seem to be bothering anything but if it is problematic, I would likely remove it. The new tank is something we have wanted to do for years, and we have gone to great lengths to try to not introduce problems. I guess I am just being a nervous nelly but we really love the new tank and don't want to have anything happen.
Any advise or guesses on the ID of this Sponge/growth would be appreciated.
