Sponge irritating gold hammer?

Had this hammer for awhile. Recently, PE has gone down. I noticed this white fiber stretched between some of the heads this morning. Sponge? Possibly the culprit for irritation?

Water change day, so I may pull the hammer and try to remove it. Will an iodide dip kill a sponge?

Yes- this is poriferan sponge and will become evasive
Use a dental pick or small crochet needle and carefully remove from within
