So I am now the proud owner of a yellow ball sponge in my sump - question that had not occurred to me before time came to add it.

they are filter feeders - are they going to be more or less successful if I put them in front or behind the mechanical filtration? Or is the stuff they eat small enough that it won’t get caught in the mechanical filtration?

They would need to be after the mechanical filter to not get clogged with crud. They eat things much smaller than a mechanical filter normally removes. I believe they eat bacteria, plankton (phyto?) and such

My yellow ball sponge is several years old. It is in a shaded medium flow area. Anything larger than phyto is too big, I stir up the gravel every day to feed my 10 sponges. They like the microfauna that gets suspended in the water column.

area where there is Moderate light and water flow and not on the sand directly and of course NEVER expose the sponge to air /out of water and feed it planktonic foods
