Last night I noticed my sponges that were growing on my live rock have almost completely disappeared. My tank is a little over a year and healthy for the most part.

I dose biofuel, mb7, pohls extra and thats about it. My calcium is a little low but I dont think that has anything to do with this.

Is this something to worry about? Any ideas what might be causing this issue?

thanks,

Alex

Sponges are odd... Some will grow in a aquarium and others don’t. Since your tank is relatively new you are probably just loosing the ones that do not survive well in a reef aquarium… Some require lots of food or bacteria in the water column to survive or they starve to death.

Allot of sponges, sea squirts and tunicates just wont survive very well in a reef aquarium especially sps aquariums because we have so few nutrients. Azoox (nps) reefs aquariums are a different story since they are fed almost continually and allot more sponges will survive this way.
