You could also allow air into the pipes for a few minutes and this will kill the sponges, and then clean out the pipe or turn it on and catch them with a fine mesh netIs not on the glass, is floating.
And coming off from inside the return pipe, after i turn it off and on the pump.
Yes a sock would do well for sureThis will not get rid of them in the return pipes but you could rubber band a mesh sock over the return pipes when restarting the pump. This should catch your free floaters. Be sure to use a long sock so it does not clog right away
