In a fight against dino is there a safe rule of thumb for dosing without being able to measure silicate? I understand test kits are hit or miss other than Hanna. I can calculate 1ppm on the unital dose but what to do from there?

Dose according to diatom growth. You want diatoms to grow for competition.

Is noticeable diatom growth with a few days or longer?

Dose 1ppm once a week as a starting guide. IME, it will deplete around that time, maybe even sooner if you have a lot of diatoms.

I dose about 1.5ppm once a week. I’ve tracked it for a few weeks with the Hanna LR silica checker.

I am a long term silica doser. I never experienced dinos/cyano in my tank, but I feel like dosing it is a safety prevention, and I also like growing sponges. Good luck!
