I have two BTAs and I’ve never spot fed them but am considering doing so. Could I purchase frozen shrimp or scallops from the grocery store and chop them up for spot feeding?

I looked into grocery store seafood as a viable option, however when looking at the packaging it appears as though the ones I found had something added to it (maybe a preservative, but can't confirm). Been a while, but I did not take the risk of accidently adding something to the tank after that. I now buy frozen shrimp bait for my eel and used to spot feed my RBTA with the same batch. I no longer feed my RBTA to date. Just the eel and its living fat and happy.

Just something to consider, but maybe others have used grocery store seafood for the long term and can speak to that.

If going that route, just make sure to check the packaging.

Hope that helps. :)

Yes, just be sure to find some seafood that doesn't have anything added, like preservatives or other nitrate solutions.

I had no trouble finding shrimp with nothing added at the grocery store, but ended up going to a seafood market to find fresh squid/scallops.

I would recommend not spot feeding a BTA, from personal experience. Not that I had anything negative happen, but just that they will do perfectly fine without being spot fed.

Instead, I would recommend “feeding the tank”, so that if the nem is hungry it will grab any food floating around - this will obviously feed your fish/coral too. I use NanoReef Frenzy and everything love it.

Recommend doing this once a week, no real reason to do it more.
