What is this brown spot on the side?

Possible sting from a coral?

I have to agree with above post, definitely looks like a "battle" scar either from another fish or coral sweeper tentacle sting. Hard to say with out knowing what other live stock and or coral you have in the tank. If you have other surgeon fish in your tank, be on the lookout for aggression and bullying.

On a side note, just monitor closely for bacterial infections if indeed it is a cut and not a burn.

Thanks. Only other fish of any meaning is a 7” Hippo, but they have been together for 9+ years and always hang out together. Perhaps anemone stung it?

what do I need to lookout for to see if a bacterial infection.

If the wound becomes infected and gets worse.

Could be the hippo, maybe they are best buds and had a quick spat.... could be something as small as a damsel that can pack a big punch for such a little guy.... could be the nen....

Best is to spend time in front of your tank and just watch. Maybe then you'll catch a glimpse of what might have caused it.

What you're looking for in terms of a bacterial infection is the red sore increasing in size or any significant changes in behavior (heavy breathing, lethargy, loss of appetite). If you suspect a bacterial infection you'll need to pull them and quarantine to treat.
