I recently bought a spotfin jawfish. He's about 3" or so. Once he got settled into his new home, he did what jawfish do...dug a hole to live in. Luckily for me, he finally decided on a front corner of my tank. This was his fourth hole, but he seems to like this area the best. I have about a 4" sandbed, so it seems to work for him. I noticed he was picking up rubble and building a rock-berm around the opening. I decided to help the little guy out and drop off more "building supplies" (shells, rubble, dead SPS/LPS skeletons, etc) nearby. He went right to work like Builder Bob. He's built a nice fort and darts out of the hole to snatch food at feeding time. He also spits sand and rocks at other critters that hang-out for too long near his apartment entrance. .
He's very entertaining to watch and quickly recognized me and my wooden dowel as the air-breather that drops off dinner everyday. Just thought I'd share my experience. In over ten years in the hobby, I've never owned a jawfish. Wish I would have gotten one sooner!
