Hello guys,
Today I noticed some weird spots on my hippo tang

How long have you had him for and was he quarantined? Any new recent additions to the tank? Almost looks like an abrasion to me but I could be wrong.

@melypr1985 @Humblefish

Had him for around 3 years, he wasn't QT at the time, he shows some white spots occasionally.
Introduced a couple of snails a month ago without QT but washed them and rubbed the shell with a toothbrush. I know this is wrong but couldn't do it.
I suspect aggression from the powder blue tang

Have you moved your rockwork around at all lately? I know my likes to hide tight in between the rocks and wonder if a new sharper edge has been recently exposed.

If he is periodically showing white spots my first guess would be ich...are they larger like grains of sand or smaller like pinpoints? Not sure if these spots would be in relation to them or something abraded and/or bacterial.

No nothing close to ich. It's way larger and pinkish in color

Hopefully Melypr will be on soon. I know Humblefish has been very busy lately.

For now, I would keep a close eye on it and make sure the spots aren't growing or changing color. Do you have any antibiotics or vitamin supplements on hand if needed?

I think it looks like some type of abrasion as well, just keep checking for any other spots to form or growth of the one now.

I always soak the food with vitamin & supplements. Never used antibiotics in the system and it's too soon to remove it to QT

My Hippo has the exact same thing. I think it's abrasions. He sleeps in pretty tight crevices. The spots have been there for several months and He is just as active and eating well.

My hippo gets these types of spots occasionally and it is always due to the rocks. As he has grown he moves to different 'caves' but that is always following an abrasion such as what you are seeing.

Its good to be concerned, but my tangs(including others) sometimes get spots just like this. Coral stings, fights, bumping into rocks and such. I think hes fine imo

Thanks guys for all ur replies! I'm sure that it's some kind of abrasions.
Yup, and since you already feed vitamins it shouldn't develop into an infection. That would be my only concern. Even then, some Focus to bind an antibiotic to food makes it reef safe and you could still treat him in tank.

Sorry I'm late! Had to work today. I agree with abrasions. Watch for infection and keep up with the vitamins in the food. Kanaplex and/or Furan2 are my choice of antibiotics if they are needed for feeding (coupled with focus). But you may not need them if he can heal up on his own, which is the obvious best result.
