So here is my question. Whenever I transfer a new frag from one system, whether is from my quarantine system or direct from the store, I have been experiencing a good bit of die off from the base of the frag for a couple days and then it seems to stop. Has anyone else experience a phenomenon like this? For larger frags it normally ok, meaning they are large enough to take a little die off and then bounce back. For smaller, high dollar frags, you’re just praying that it stops before the entire thing is torched given then they may be so few polyps on the frag in the first place.

Anytime I have base die-off, or paling at the base, it's always because my phosphate is too low.

Hey Joe, the die off I am referring to is only on the newly introduced piece. I would think if it was a “nutrients” issue the die off would be seen more system wide. in this situation all other acros are growing at a healthy clip, some faster than weeds.

Good point. Your main acros might be used to whatever levels you have though/or better at fighting for what nutrients are in the tank.. Just a thought.

Will tag some sps experts for you, i havent had this issue, stalled growth and shipping trauma but not a consistent recession from all frags.

Thanks Gareth. I should also note that none of the frags in question when through any type of shipping prior to being placed in the tank. Unless we call the drive home from the LFS shipping. But I’d love to hear some
more thoughts.

Yup there could totally be something to that. But id say in the majority of cases unless you are throwing a piece into so radically different chemistry you should be ok. But that is a big generalization.

Anytime there is a change in the environment example temperature, water chemistry, lighting etc sps sometime will go to dormant stage until they get acclimated to their new environment. When they go to dormant stage they stop growing therefore the outer edge of the base get effective the most. Thats why sometime we buy a frag and it just sit there for months
