SPS bleaching after tank up-grade

Thanks to everyone for your help!! I always learn something new from this great community! I never knew that Po4 played such an important role in SPS health, I only monitored it because of algae concerns. I will be getting a better test kit for this. I am almost certain as many have said that the dkh spike played a major role in my SPS decline. A stupid mistake on my part, one I should have known better and cant grasp why I dismissed it at the time. I guess so much going through ones head during such a large change it can be a bit overwhelming .. just goes to show there is a lot to this hobby, but that is what makes it so rewarding.

I lost one more Acro last night to rapid tissue loss, about half of the tissue was missing when I got home from work... I suppose the stress finally got the best of him. I re tested water parameters and nothing has changed. I have a large outbreak of diatoms over the last two days, which I think im going to call a good thing for now, meaning new rock is cycled? Now for many small water changes to try and remove some silicates and keep moving forward. On a plus side all LPS and softies are looking great!

I will post updates..

Hard lessons to learn sometimes are the best ways to learn since they leave such an impression

The diatoms in your tank will run their course naturally and should go away shortly
I've never worried about diatoms and usually welcome them as they are an important part of the maturation process. They will rapidly use up the silicates in days and be gone as fast as they appeared.

Don't give up on your sps too quick even if they appear dead, I've had solid white sps make small recoveries that could be fragged after a few months
Some make a full recovery as it's just the coral having expelled all the symbiotic algae from their tissue.
Keep an eye out at night for any signs of polyps still inside the structure.
When algae covers them, green or brown it is usually the last sign of goodby

Good luck to you and happy reefing
