most recent tank params
alk 8.25~
cal 440
mg 1500
no3 - 10
p04- .07
ph 8.1
average 350 par
2 gyres on each side

here are some pics of some acro frags giving me trouble.
1st pic is rru firecracker,- bought it as great looking coral from a vendor online, but at purchase it was just brownish. havent had enough experience to say it cant get its colors back, maybe due to cutting stress, but I gave it a shot. the top side of it has been bleaching a little

2nd pic - also from vendor 1, it was vivids green monster SPS, but its lost its VIVID green body. this thing was SUPER green , like bali slimer. any opinions on what happened? its like blue/purple now. reminds me of bonsai valida

3rd pic this is an anacropora from LFS that has bleached

4th pic - marvin the martian 2nd frag attempt from vendor 1. this one also STN'd and its bone white now, (goner)

5th pic - golden jawdropper has bleached, from vendor 1

hypothesis 1
I was thinking I should not buy small frags anymore, for SPS at least, they are just way too finicky at a small size.

hypothesis 2:
it could be this particular vendor, he was moving this month to another house down the street and may have shocked the frags presale, as they could have been in a different holding tank. I dont know, i didnt ask get into details with him, yet. (doesnt explain 3rd pic bleaching too though)

hypothesis 3:
I havent nailed the dynamics of light, alkalinity and nutrients for my tank yet.
I recently increased my n03 from nearly undetectable to 10 slowly over weeks, thinking low nutrients may have been an issue.
I just read a post today about how one reefers bleaching stopped when he raised his alk up to 10~
-- Maybe for my tank a higher alkalinity is necessary , to go along with the 350 par, nutrients, and high flow.

what do you guys think?

What’s the temperature it’s probably to hot for them. I would turn the temp down slowly to 75 f I would do this over a course of three days. Also turn your light pad down to about 250. I would do this for about a week and if it gets better than you know what your problem is and I would keep going with it until it’s completely healed and slowly introduce it to the higher light

temp is actually 70.2 f at the moment , (a/c is on) usually its around 74=75. could a lower temp cause these problems too? i've started lowering the light yesterday, i reduced output by 10% so far. so around 320 par at the moment. I've also moved the a few of the frags off side to the lighting, and a few back on the frag rack, which is also off side.

Can you give us details on your system? Export method, lighting, # of fish, how much you feed, and everything you’re dosing?

"Put simply, water temperatures at or above 82 degrees Fahrenheit will eventually result in system problems. The desired temperature range is somewhere between 75 and 80 degrees.

Delbeek and Sprung concurred in 2005,
The temperature in reef aquariums should be maintained between 22-27°C (72-80°F) for the best results, and kept as stable as possible. In our experience, the center of this temperature range, 23-25°C (74-78°F), is ideal.

While in 2009 Dr. Ron Shimek reiterated,
recommend warmer water temperatures, at least 82 [°F] for good health…

So then, there you have it. It’s all very clear what we should be doing, isn’t it? Sure, clear in the same way that mud is clear."

.... Clear as mud ... :) ill put a heater in there tonight though, i have a few spares laying around.

export methods: skimmer, cheato refugium, some medias in media cup: floss, purigen,
lighting : led popbloom turing 75, 35%,90%,90%,75% channels, on 24 hr vivid color mode, and lunar cycle moonlights, (theres a thread for further details on this light)
about 10 small to medium size fish in a 59g+13g sump, fed with flakes and pellets twice a day, frozen either mysis/brine/krill once daily. then phytoplankton twice weekly , and also Red Sea reef energy A/B twice weekly at night.
dosing: randy's 2 part recipe, soda ash mix, calcium mix, mag mix, and kalkwasser 35ml every hour. because of kalk , I am currently not actually dosing calcium and mg mixes.

Any fluctuations with parameters ?
temp , alk ?
not with alk
Not much with temp.., it probably is between 70.2 and 73 due to a/c going on and off. I will recheck tank temp when a'c is off for a few hours. thermostat set to 20 degrees

Purigen is killing your corals. Get rid of it
Don’t forget to thank me later

sorry if I missed it. How old is the tank and how did you start it.... live rock vs dry?
its two year 5 month old rock, that was started as dry dead rock (white marco), and a few pieces of live rock from moani hawaii.. all transferred to a new tank and sump 9 months ~ ago.

Hi, always sad when things like that happen.
For the kh i would target the same level as the one your salt have, less swings doing wc.
As for the temp, if you had a 5 degree swing look no further, this could explain the death of your frags.

I got into SPS this year. It's my second tank. My first tank had easy SPS that grew like wildfire within the first year. I never dosed alk or CA on this tank and stability was average at best. My second tank I started with dry rock and dead sand. I tested meticulously and stability was A+. I could not even grow purple stylo at the 12 month mark.

Around the 18 month mark, things just started growing really well. No major changes whatsoever. My interpretations is that some SPS died due to health - some frags weren't "healed" - and some are due to my tank maturity and didn't include the major params - ca, alk, mg, temp , ph, salinity

Just my 2 cents if you feel like your params are stable!

BTW in terms of lighting..... chinese leds on both tanks. Doesn't make a diff on SPS survivability IME. May make a difference in coloring up, but I'm not advanced enough to know.

Wow 70-73 degrees I wish I could swallow this cause it would save me a ton on electric. I keep my reef at 78 because that’s what I thought I’ve read it’s best at about. Maybe I should do more research

Do you have yellow tinted water during W/C's or just not mind (its light blocking properties, though harmless otherwise.)
It’s over stripping your water….. and I’ve never thought about yellow tinted water. I’m too busy looking at my corals
