Hello reefers,

I have a 6 month old baby, who does not want to sleep much, so naturally I’m searching the web for new information in regards to coral. I have stumbled upon coral spawning, and I’m very intrigued. I have learned a lot about it in the ocean, but was wondering if anyone has any luck in this hobby doing it? What was your process? How long do they take to grow from sperm and egg to a one inch frag?

I have had spawn in my tank with A. Austera. Nothing comes of it. There are many stories of spawning events, but none that I have ever heard actually produced any new coral.

This is not to be confused with Pocilipora "spawning" and dropping new babies everywhere, which is not really a true spawn like what you are talking about.

What jda mentions is also known as polyp bailout if you were curious.

Richard Ross spoke about this at Macna, he also has a video where they walked through the actual facility talking about everything. @Thales :)
Awesomeness on the tube
That video is incredible. I am completely hooked. What an exciting time to be a hobbyist as we can control the forward progress of this topic.

Is there anyone on here that has a tank dedicated to this? I am going to do some more research and will be setting one up, but would like to find a group of people who are also interested in this to throw ideas around to each other.

I'm slowly working on it in my tank as well. I've set up moonlights, but need to get a lux meter to calibrate them as far as 100% "full moon" brightness goes. Then I need to switch from my reeflink over to a neptune wxm so that I can control the daytime light for the season as well.

I think one of the issues we'll face as hobbiests is not knowing exactly where our corals came from - and hence not knowing exactly when to expect a spawn and to what seasonal variation we should tune our lights.

the video that was posted above had some suggestions. The big takeaway I had was that they claimed it wouldn’t be hard to talk with your vendor to instruct the collector to choose
A) coral from a certain region. If you find this out , a lot of the environmental questions you’ll need to set the lights is public knowledge.
B) recommended that the coral that’s picked be selected from opposite ends of the reef so you get generic variance. If you don’t, they will spawn, but won’t be able to attach the sperms to the eggs.

If your doing this I would just buy from la or livestockusa so you know exactly where the pieces are coming from, no confusion then.

I totally agree. If I had set up my tank originally with this project in mind I would have done just that - as well as setting it up more project-focused (less live rock, more coral stands to make it easier to clean and feed the corals etc). There's always a second tank.. but my house isn't that big :D

I'll have to make due with what I have - a mix of a little bit of everything. *If* I can get a spawn, then I can mark the date and work from that to plan for the next spawn in a year.
