I had some STN/RTN about a month ago once I started carbon dosing and was wondering what to do about the larger frags that had the bottom section of them STN away. Reason I am asking is I've heard they will not grow over old skeleton so I was wondering if I should

A) Cut Skeleton

B) Glue Over

C) Putty Over

D) Leave Alone

Thank you all!

The true answer is it doesn’t matter, at all. If they are otherwise healthy and conditions are right, you can frag it and they’ll regrow or leave it and it’ll grow over that or over glue, or over putty, if it’s the type that encrusts a base....

Mind you, some don’t. I have anacropora where the very base died and it never grew over and it has never encrusted, colony is thriving. Same with some, but not all, stylophora...

I prefer to cut at the dead/living line and glue to a fresh plug. To me a fresh cut, especially to a frag/mini colony, will spur some new growth.

I leave and let new tissue eventually grow over, or not lol. If dies goes in the calcium reactor lol.

Thanks for everyone who commented and voted.

It turns out that all my issues were from a faulty heater. It was keeping the tank temp around 82 degrees and it was still going. I have set up a temp controller now.

Glad you figured out the cause! I bet with time it'll grow back down over the base, assuming it's not too shaded.

Yeah it was about 82.7 approaching 83 and heater wasn't cutting off. So I think I was having temp swings paired with it raising temp too high. Thankfully got a controller now.
