sps fragging?

I want to frag 1 of my acros while im cleaning the tank 2day, but im worried i might end up killing it,being acros are sensitive...do i frag it the same way i frag chalices, acans, etc..

Cut, glue, dip in iodine for 5-10 min, then back in tank?

Any other info would be great

i skip the iodine to try and reduce stress ( not that i'm against dipping and i can see where it would be beneficial). i just cut, glue, and place back in tank to heal.

Most of the time I end up breaking a piece off of my SPS when I am doing stuff in and around the tank. I usually just grab the piece and mount it to a frag disk with reef glue and add back to tank or the frag system. If they have been in your tank for a while they will be pretty hardy and usually won't die. I usually don't dip mine since they are out of the same tank but a little coral revive dip would not hurt. Even when I frag them I just snip a piece and then mount and place after glue has set.

ok.. this piece is like a mini colony....about 4in.tall, 2in. wide, and about 6 , 1/2 to 2 inch branches........i was going to just cut one branch off..

I think you will be ok fragging it. I've fragged several of my acros and my ORA red planet has been cut several times in just the past 3 months and i've had no problems at all.

Yup, as Saltwater Man says, just cut, glue and back into the tank. They are pretty resilient if healthy and acclimated. I use plenty of glue on acros.

I don't even Iodide dip my SPS's, just break off what I'm fragging, sit it somewhere while I remember where my stuff is (this sometimes is in the water), get a nice good sized glob of glue, set the frag, then either set on a rack while I do up the rest, or resubmerge into the tank.

Really, they're VERY hardy. True they're sensitive to water conditions and stuff, but most SPS's are often exposed during tidal activity. You can treat them much less delicatley than you would a chalice or something like an Acan where you end up with exposed flesh.

Iodine helps them recover, like how we use it to treat our cuts and burns.

Always a good procedure to add an iodine dip to your fragging adventures.

Also dip in iodine when I frag. Seems to help. I've done it both ways. I always dip any chalices I frag, it seems to help them heal faster.

I never dip any of mine and I have been fragging acros for years, I think the stress from a dip would only make it harder on the frag. One important thing is once you put the frag in the glue get it in water, as the super glue cures the chemical reaction causes heat and can cause tissue recession or worse. The water will help it keep cool during curing. Use a good thick gel so the coral is held in the position you want.
