Sps frags death on new reeftank

That makes sense - since if you lower the light - the alkalinity consumption would drop. However - It is pretty standard - if you're adding new coral to an existing tank with high lighting - that you decrease the lighting somewhat to avoid problems. This IMHO is standard reef keeping. However - I'm trying to think of every angle. There is little or no risk to 'old corals' for a month of decreased lighting - however the new corals exposed to a new higher lighting can be a significant problem - especially considering the alkalinity and the flow in the tank.

I'm just following what I do/did. There is no downside to lowering light for some days. If it wasn't a routine setting, my guess is that light manufacturers would not offer it?
I never adjust light or acclimate anything to light. I just put it where it typically should go for its light requirements. The tank it came from had it in specific light based on coral type so it just transfers in to similar light par and spectrum in my opinion. All my SPS just go up top mainly and a few in the middle.
 
Those are great numbers… hmmmm I’m kind of baffled as you’re doing everything right.. do you do water changes? I could see ya losing a monti as it might have got fried as those xr30 don’t look like much but they can cook some stuff.. how are you light acclimating the new additions? What percentage are you running the radions at and what schedule?
I am a bit lazy but i do 10% every two weeks
 
I have an XR30 over my 20" cube tank and I run AB+ @ 100% intensity all channels 100%.
I did never light acclimate any acro and have not lost one ever since.

So I dont know...


Any stray voltage or something wrong with your RODI?
Not sure... Maybe something is rusty...
Not sure on the rodi. I am sending an icp this sunday on both my rodi water and tank
 
I agree with the above posts. Tank biome is not ready yet. Do you have abundant coraline growing?
Great point. I do not. I have some in the glass and wave makers. But almost none in the rocks
 
Agree. I would consider getting (borrowing) a PAR meter, and sending an ICP test. IME, the cause for not to 'thrive' is either a shifting parameter (alkalinity, light, etc etc). Damage from a shipper is also possible - leading to a bacterial infection. are you carefully matching your salinity, etc with the shipper you're using? Can you ask your shipper/store which lighting they are using and trying to match that? Lastly - are you dipping your corals in anything?
I did use a par meter when i set up the tank. At the top of the rock par was at 375.

I have heard of pathogenic bacteria. But in Costa Rica i cannot do a biome test so not sure how to approach this anymore
 
Belo a picture of a frag that is still alive. Been in the tank for about 2 months.

Is it getting some sort of direct flow that might be too much? This doesn't look like lighting now after the photo more than something irritating it.
No direct flow. Actually that one is not even close to any wave maker output

consider popping off the coral and dipping it.
 
I would do like the guy above me says. Pop it off, dip it, glue it to a rubble rock peice and move it to a good flow area, not direct but where water is defiantly moving.
Ok. Ill give it a try. Nothing to loose trying.

Make sure to monitor during the dip. If you see an army of bugs pop off after a minute or so then you know the cause. If you see those bugs rinse with tank water outside the tank before putting back. Reply with the outcome. Even if there are no bugs- the dip could buy you time.
