SPS Growth Challenge - Anyone?

I'm reefing on a budget over here.

Isn't that an oxymoron?

I was beginning to feel the same way. The larger the scope of this was getting it seemed like a run of the mill colony was pretty lackluster. The one I had picked out came in as an ultra and is nice looking but it's no large aussie shortcake.

I am afraid I don't have any real stand out colonies large enough to meet the need of this one. My offer still stands for the aussie but I would not be offended in the least if you guys wanted to go with something fancier. My biggest consideration was that this colony was not fresh off the boat.

agreed. Going to have to come up with the entry amount as well. Maybe battle can assist with distribution as well? If everyone's frag comes from battle we all have the same acclimation or adjustment phase ahead of us.

Battle sent me pictures of the aussie. As Battle mentioned, its no stunner, but would be fine for assessing growth in the contest. I think we need to put some options to vote.

1) Use Battle's aussie - fragged into about 25 frags. Figure somewhere around $40 for contest entry (including shipping). If anyone wants to order extra corals from Battle, there would be no extra shipping.

2) Everyone independantly comes up with a green slimer frag (local or otherwise).

3) I buy a couple big ultra grade colonies from a wholesaler and frag them up. Maybe 2-3 nice frags per person. Figure somewhere around $70-$75 for contest entry (including shipping of the frags)

Let's socialize this. Thoughts? If someone wants to add a poll, that might be a good way to address this.

#1 is probably the best option since it cuts down on most of the variables. Could you share a picture with the rest of us? I have a fairly small tank and almost no room left. I don't want to end up with a coral that I don't want to keep.

#2 is OK, but it really introduces some variables into it since they may or may not be genetically similar and they will likely all come from different conditions. The biggest issue with #3 is that many of these don't do well in tanks and we might not end up with many entries at the end.

Not a stunner? Speak for yourself there, Ive had plenty O' pieces that aren't stunners, turn into them in my tank! In fact i think a coral like that would be a better was to go because as the end we could compare color too. Maybe make the contest growth and color, separately though.

Its strange - I looked at it on my laptop last night and couldn't notice much color, but opened it on my desktop today and it looks good. Its got some sections with nice hints of blues and greens. Amazing what a difference in displays makes.

My vote would probably go for option #1. Again, thanks to Battlecorals for hooking this up.

Also, when we have the final list together - keep in mind that participants close to each other can split the entry costs (ie. one shipped package with 3 frags for example). Entry costs are completely driven by the shipping costs, so any consolidation will save participants.

Hell yea, that could be a sweet piece with some Coral Vitalizer and Sponge Power. I like the growth patern a lot.

I already have a graduated cylinder that i can use for displacement measurement.

Ps you can get lab equipment pretty cheap Amazon. Got me a 25ml pipette and a pipetter for like 8 bucks. Graduated cylinder was like 5, and those are glass ones. Plastic was even cheaper.

Again not the nicest acro in the world but I do see potential. I should state again that I will take no offense if you guys would like to do this with a fancier acro.

I have talked to jeremy about actually being the one to distribute the frags. I am not looking to make any money on this one only to recoupe shipping materials and expenses.

I am getting some info ready for him and will let him know what I can do for you guys.

as he said earlier. anyone who can get a few friends togeter to combine shipping will save tremoundously.



Of course it goes with out saying that it looks better in person as well.
