Sps growth. MHs vs LEDs

Guys. General poll here.

If some approached you and said their only goal is to grow colorful and thriving sps tank. And then asked you what lighting. What would you say?

Metal halides for sure,I just made the switch to leds but if someone asked me right now I would say halides.idk if there's any argument to it either lol.

Metal halides also, I also made the switch to led but metal halides are tried and true.

I think it depends on the led, there are led's out there from $200 to $2000. I had a buddy tell me his switch from halides to Led's was a disaster, he was using a cheap homemade unit. I switched from halides to the Radium Pro's and could not be happier. Growth is as good as halides if not better, color is much better and tank runs much cooler, all that plus much more control allows me different lighting schedules and to have different lighting throughout the day.

Metal halides grow sticks great, some LEDs grow them too, but halides are still the best for sticks.

That would be MH all day long for the fastest growth and excellent color.

MH. definitely. not hating on LEds at all. And also a MH combo with Blue LED is awesome for zoas too. I tried all LED for my zoas and PE's ....i didn't get the results i wanted.

Metal Halide is best for SPS Growth no doubt. :bigsmile:
10K for faster growth add some T5 Actinics for color.
14K for growth and color
20K for slower growth and vibrant colors

I've ran both separately with great results and run both now. But if i had to choose between the two it would be halides for now.

I've gotten great growth from my radions, comperable to my old MH and whatever growth i'm sacrificing is made up in the lack of heat and additional color ive noticed.

If heat, bulb replacement, and power consumption is not part of the equation, go with MH....if these factors play a roll, LED is the light to go with.

I honestly will have to say the Reefbreeders replacement for my 250w halide was an upgrade, that said the growth was better when I had my 400w halide vs the LEDs. The color is much better with LEDs IMO.
