I am curious how the corals are named.

I see some seller's that have a [coral vendor] [goofball name] name convention. I see a similar coral at other vendors but it still has the same prefix vendor..

example WWC Yellow Tip could be sold by Jo Smoe coral.. Why isn't it Jo Smoe Yellow Tip.. Is there some convention the coral sellers are following?

Because the yellow tip was aquacultured by WWC. Joe Schmoe just fragged it. If you import the wild coral with no name, grow it out in captivity, frag the captive growth, then you get to name it when selling frags of the Now captive grown(aquacultured) coral. Captive grown corals are more hardy in the aquarium environment in general compared to getting corals direct from the ocean, especially acropora.

Exactly, it’s about lineage. Venders often times use the same name for different corals so it’s important to know what you are actually getting, for example many will pay good money for a piece of TSA Rainbow Fusion, but TCK Rainbow Fusion is a completely different Coral and sells for much less.

Really it's an extension of the "keep Mrs/Mr Shmoe from freaking out" convention.

All the hot sticks get cherry picked out and hyped up.

And nine times out of ten, Joe overpaid for both and told Mrs/Mr Shmoe it was an investment. So Joe's gotta sell frags with the name that the hype was built around to get the ROI on the investment that was promised to Mrs/Mr Shmoe or......

If Joe is a vendor it's even worse bc he promised Mrs/Mr Shmoe he could make a living on those "investments".

It usually works out, bc Joe's a gamer and he'll hustle to get that ROI somehow...

And Mrs/Mr Shmoe sees the compliment that it presents to him/her. Joe has a type (on trend hot fire) and it typically extends far beyond corals to the inclusion of Mrs/Mr Shmoe.

The best ones are Joe's who are gamers amongst gamers.

They take the same high end stick with a hyped up name, rebrand it with an even more hyped up name and sell frags at a higher price point than the original hyped up name could sustain.

Really not a big deal IMO except for those who's budget can't support their "hot fire" taste. Those Joe's tend to get a little blow Hardy either about how fire their livestock is, or how uncool it is for others to have a few hundred to spend on a frag if they like it.
