Hi I found a small piece of coral, as in tiny that came as a hitch hiker on a piece of live rock so I have had it on the sand and it has grown to this but not sure what it is. Any help would be great, thanks.

That sounds like a cool find, I've just lost a massive colony of red digi over the last month and don't know why and this is still going strong so it's a little fighter. Oh and thanks for the id.

Looks like a pink pocillopora. Pretty cool. Used to be very common pre indo export ban but now it’s increasingly uncommon. (But still easy to find atm)
i wonder if the price will go back to what it was pre-ban or if the suppliers will be taking advantage of the higher prices once the ban is lifted

Much like other economies, I think people will try to keep prices the same until the market becomes saturated again, forcing people to lower them to compete. Of course, I also believe that collectors will ask for more, too. They are not ignorant as to the demand!

I was talking to my lfs owner that I've been going to for the last 12 year, he was saying that due to more and more bans that by 2020 that it's going to be hard to get corals. He's very friendly with someone whose growing/ helping grow corals out in Australia and has told him prices of corals are just going to get more and more expensive. Due to some greedy people out there who have over done their quotas of what they were allowed to take, they have been given heavy fines and jail sentences. It just makes the whole reef hobby a really hard thing to enjoy when people take advantage and ruin it for everyone else.

Rant over.

there is only one thing on my mind when I think of the year 2020 and reef keeping/coral bans are not one of em.. its easy for governments to put bans on these things there just aint enough hobbyists to correct the powers at hand.

but we will see even with the ban or future ban, I am sure there will be plenty of likeminded hobbyists who will not over price their frags and the private community will take over the LFS in the whole.

Surprisingly at the recent coral show here in San Diego, prices were very reasonable, it was truly a good feeling. Even Jason Fox himself sold stuff at very reasonable prices and I was expecting gouge city that day.

I'm over here in the UK. I wish we had the that here like frag swaps and coral shows. You used to be able to buy frags and fish on FB from localish reefers, but that's been banned unless you have a licence as its live animal selling, so you have to buy from lfs which I dont mind supporting, but they are getting few and far between now. The downside to most lfs is they dont sell the smaller frags which makes a coral quite expensive as your buying a small colony.
