Day 3

So, a copule of updates.

1- bought Aquavitro Fuel and am dosing 1ml 2x a week to supplement fatty acids, carbo hydrates, vitamins and amino acids.

2- setup a dosing pump to dose Tropic Marin All-for-Reef, an all in one solution of Alk, Cal, Mag and other trace elements. Dosing 2ml per day this first week.

Day 3

Removed the corals and gave them a first bath in Coral RX. Stuff came out, but not sure if it were hitchhikers.

Day 4:

Here are the corals today:

My Alk is very low. The salt mixes at 6,7dKH and the daily consumption seems to be at 0,38dKH. Current Alk is at 6,1dKH. Dosing 2ml of TM AFR to bring it up.

Poccilopora seems rather brown. Any comments? Could this be related to the low Alk? Is it more a light issue?

Help would be appreciated.

VJV,
Not sure if your doing a low nutrient system here and dosing carbon. I find alk(KH) best for my corals at 6.8. if it swings more then 1.0 either way in about a 24 hour period I would get burnt tips on the corals. They come right back, but it takes a few weeks. So rock solid numbers is extremely important. And its very difficult to do with such a small volume of water. And major growth spurts and you rushing around trying to correct things.
Corals look great! Polyp extension is great. lack of color may be a light/ params combination.....

Thanks! I am not carbon dosing but given I have no fish in here I am not adding any nutrients to the tank so in the end it is a ULN system. That is why I dose Aquavitro Fuel, essentials coral food in the form of amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins and carbohydrates.

I know he volume is very small and this creates a challenge in terms of keeping stable parameters. I hope to keep them in check with the auto doser but we will see. given the low amount it is required (2ml per day) I would need a high be doser to be able to spread across the day in very small quantities like 0,1ml 20 times a day. My current doser is probably not accurate enough to divide 2ml in several small doses so inevitably there will be a little seesaw effect as the tank consumes Alk between dosing, but I hope this will not be too severe.

Thank you for the feedback.

Great suggestion! Just need to check if this particular product can be diluted but in theory it should be possible.

Thanks!

Well, Mr Hans Werner-Balling himself answered my email and apparently All-for-Reef may not be diluted as it could cause fungal growth in the product.

Day 7

Corals seem to be doing great [emoji847]

Dosing 2ml of Tropic Marin All-For-Reef per day. Alkalinity still low at 6,1dKH but corals seem happy.

If you use RO DI water I dont see why it would. Not sure what that product does as I make most of my own stuff. Fancy bottled stuff has never seemed to work for me in the past. I would say move on to another product or try mixing it in smaller quantities to start...............

Thanks, but I am going to stay with this. The only other all-in-one (calcium+Alk+mag) is Kalkwasser, and I do not want to run the risk of a PH swing because the ATO got stuck in the on position. I am also not doing 2 part because I do not have more dosing pumps. This also adds strontium, manganese, and a whole bunch of other trace elements. Corals are doing fine so I will keep with it for now.

VJV,
Kalkwasser is NOT a all in one additive. Kalkwasser is straight calcium ions and thats it. "All in ones" give you the correct ratio of ocean water. Not the correct ratio of what your tank is consuming.
Because your tank is so small, all you should need to auto dose is buffer and maybe calcium. The rest can be added once a week or bi-weekly etc.....

I know. I did not explain myself correctly. Basically I want to maintain Alk and Calcium. Kalkwasser does that. The other elements for me are an "added bonus". Your suggested approach certainly is simpler but since I already bought this I will stick with it for the time being.

Kalkwasser will help maintain the tanks ability to buffer acids in the system. However, even with kalkwasser, buffer will be needed. Probably a little less, but still needed.
Yes, I make all my own. Much cheaper and I know whats actually in it. Too expensive to buy the fancy bottled stuff! My tank uses 94 mls a day of just buffer...........

By the way, the corals look good. Lack of color on one, probably needs a little more light.........

You mean the poccilopora right? I can increase the intensity of the light as it is still at 50%, but have heard time and time again that too much light kills coral much faster than too little, so am a bit concerned about increasing intensity too much. But probably will do it gradually like 10% per week.

yes, it looks a little brown. Its a pretty forgiving coral and very hardy compared to acropora in my opinion. Yes I would certainly increase it gradually for sure. Any idea what kind of PAR your getting from the light?
