So I’ve had water in my 180g for about 8 weeks now. I’ll stop right there because I know what you’re thinking “you’re crazy, be patient”, and that was always the the plan. Here’s the curve ball, the tank is an upgrade from a 120g, about 2/3 of the rock came out of that tank which was in that tank for roughly 6 years. The other 1/3 of the rock cycled in a brute for 4 months prior to the new tank being setup.

When I transferred to the new tank I got rid of most of the coral except some larger LPS colonies and a frag I kept of some green no name acro. One of the rocks still has the encrusted base of that same acro where the colony used to be. I figured that these would die off in short order and that it would take 6 months to get into sps shape. The thing is that the frag has actually taken off. It’s encrusting, growing, and starting to branch already. The old colony base is also starting to grow new bumps that look to be becoming branches. The tank is taking about 30ml/day of 2 part already to hold alk stable which I assume is the coraline and few LPS frags. There is a very, very light dusting of diatoms in the tank, but otherwise no sign of algae other than the typical film on the glass. I was expecting the usual tank uglies but they don’t seem to be materializing. All this has me wondering if the tank is already ready for SPS? Maybe because the rock is mostly several years wet, with the new stuff already 6 months wet? Thoughts?

Provided you maintain the correct water and lightning parameters you should be fine, if you can’t then you may have issues, as many do

My new system had SPS from the start without issues, just make sure you also acclimatise them to your lights as well.

Maybe try a few and see how you get on and good look
